The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) finds itself in a tricky situation to comply with the order of Akal Takht pertaining to restoring the traditional colour of Nishan Sahib (Sikh flag) hoisted on a long pole and covered with the same colour cloth known as ‘chola’ on the gurdwara premises across the globe. The ‘kesri’ (saffron) colour cloth of Nishan Sahib, being in practice for several decades in Sikh shrine complexes, has to be replaced with either ‘basanti’ (xanthic/a tone of orange) or surmai (greyish blue) uniformly. Several Sikh organisations have complained to Akal Takht that many gurdwaras cover the Nishan Sahib with ‘kesri’ colour, which according to them, denotes the Hindu religion and not Sikhism. Golden Temple GM Bhagwant Singh Dhangera said: “A panel will be formed to choose the exact colour for Nishan Sahib.”
