Malerkotla: Muslim outfits threaten stir against Centre’s move on Wakf

The Union Government’s move to bring a Bill in Parliament for making several amendments to the Wakf Act has not gone down well with the Muslims in this region. Several Muslim organisations and clerics have threatened to launch coordinated protests to oppose the proposed amendments and stop the government from interfering with the legal status and powers of the Wakf boards. The office-bearers of various organisations, including Muslim Samaj Sewa and Sudhar Committee, Haji Faqir Mohammad Memorial Trust, Punjab Global Warming Alam Organisation and Small Farmers Federation, have alleged that the Union Government was bent upon interfering in the legal and exclusive rights of Muslim organisations. “The BJP has always been against Wakf boards and properties and it has made repeated attempts to ruin all Muslim institutions,” said Mohammad Akhtar Shad, chairman of the Small Farmers Federation. Hashim Soofi, a member of the Punjab Wakf Board, said the government was bent upon spreading hatred among the Hindus and Muslims by making such moves, ignoring that benefits of properties and institutes run by Wakf boards were equally shared by members of all communities, including Hindus and Sikhs.
