Farmers protest move to honour Haryana cops

Protesters burn an effigy of the Central Government in Patiala. Patiala, August 1 Activists of the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) staged protests across the state opposing the Haryana Government’s proposal of awarding gallantry medals to six police personnel, including three IPS officers, for “showing exceptional courage” in stopping protesting farmers at Shambhu and Khanauri borders in February this year. After receiving a recommendation from the Director General of Police (DGP), the state government had proposed the names of Ambala range IG Sibash Kabiraj, then Ambala SP Jashndeep Singh Randhawa, Jind SP Sumit Kumar (all IPS officers) and Haryana Police Service (HPS) officers Narender Singh, Ram Kumar and Amit Bhatia for gallantry medals. The move irked the farmers protesting at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders and triggered protests. Farmers also staged protests in Patiala city. They gathered at the jail road here and burnt an effigy of the top BJP leaders, Centre, Haryana Government and police officials. Farm leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said the Haryana Government was honouring those who had used drones and dropped tear-gas shells on farmers. — TNS
