Withdraw clauses that punish granthis, gurdwara bodies under anti-sacrilege law, demand head priests

Head priests of Akal Takht and Golden Temple on Tuesday held a special meeting where they urged the government to withdraw those clauses in the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act that proposed punishment to granthi, Sikh organisations, gurdwara committees and Sangat.

Those who attended the meeting were head granthi of Golden Temple Giani Amarjit Singh, Giani Gurminder Singh, Giani Balwinder Singh, Giani Rajdeep Singh, Giani Baljit Singh, Giani Parvinderpal Singh, Giani Kewal Singh, head granthi of Akal Takht Giani Gurmukh Singh and additional chief granthi Giani Malkiat Singh.

They stated that the law to give strictest punishment to a person who desecrated Guru Granth Sahib was undoubtedly a fine move. However, they added that it was highly objectionable to bring institutions of the Sikh community and granthis, gurdwara panels and Sangat under the legal ambit in matters related to the crime of sacrilege.

They suggested the government and Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to deliberate on “the serious issue”, adding that amending the law according to Sikh sentiments was in the best interest of the Panth
