Thousands pay tributes to Namdhari martyrs in Malerkotla

Thousands of people, including office-bearers of social and religious organisations, paid tributes to Namdhari martyrs during a state-level programme here on Saturday. Sixty-six Namdharis were executed by the British at Malerkotla on January 17, 1872.

Addressing the gathering at the Namdhari Smarak, Punjab Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian reiterated his government’s earlier stance to help the leaders of the Namdhari sect to spread teachings of its founder Satguru Ram Singh and keep the sacrifice of Kukas alive. “The Punjab Government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is committed to perpetuate sacrifices made by the martyrs, laid down their lives to pave way for the freedom struggle,” said Mundian.

He said that the path of non-violence, non-cooperation and non-obedience shown by Satguru Ram Singh had given a new direction to the country’s freedom struggle
