SAD rejects reconstituted SIT probing saroops case

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Thursday rejected the reconstituted special investigation team (SIT) formed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government to probe the alleged disappearance of 328 unaccounted saroops of Guru Granth Sahib.

The Bureau of Investigation of the Punjab Police has issued fresh orders constituting a six-member SIT, superseding earlier teams formed in December 2025 and January 2026.

Ropar Range Deputy Inspector General Nanak Singh has been appointed chairman of the SIT. Other members include Khanna Senior Superintendent of Police Darpan Ahluwalia; Patiala Superintendent of Police (Detective) Gurbans Singh Bains; SAS Nagar Superintendent of Police (Special Branch) Sukhnaaz Singh; Amritsar ACP (Detective) Harminder Singh; and Amritsar C-Division police station SHO Sub-Inspector Rajwant Kaur.

Senior SAD leader Maheshinder Singh Grewal alleged the new team was formed because the earlier SIT had refused to follow “illegal orders” to implicate SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal. He claimed the government ignored the directive of the Akal Takht Jathedar to appoint only “amritdhari” officers to ensure observance of religious maryada during the probe.

Grewal alleged the new SIT would attempt to implicate the SAD leadership on “frivolous grounds”. “The devotees understand that the saroops were not missing and were dispatched to gurughars. There were only discrepancies in records,” he further said.

SAD leader Parambans Singh Romana also questioned the credibility of the SIT members, alleging that SIT chairman Nanak Singh’s role was under scrutiny in a separate case and that another officer held bias against the previous SAD government
