Resolve SYL issue amicably, don’t stretch it further: Bhagwant Mann after meet with Haryana CM

The emotive and long-disputed Satluj Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue between Punjab and Haryana should be resolved amicably and not stretched further, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said on Tuesday.

“We have fought enough… it is high time we talk to each other and move towards a resolution,” Mann is learnt to have said during his meeting with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on the sharing of river waters through the SYL canal.

The meeting lasted around 40 minutes, during which Punjab Secretary (Water Resources) Krishan Kumar made a presentation on the state’s available water resources and the rapidly depleting groundwater table in Punjab.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Mann said Punjabis are descendants of Bhai Kanhaiya, who served water even to his enemies during war. “Haryana is like our younger brother, not our enemy,” he said.

Mann added that both Chief Ministers agreed that officers from Punjab and Haryana would now hold joint meetings every 10 to 15 days and brief the two governments on the progress of their deliberations.

He described the meeting as having been conducted in a very amicable atmosphere.

The SYL canal issue has been a bone of contention between the two states for the past several years.

Last May, the Supreme Court directed the two states to cooperate with the Centre for an amicable solution to the decades-old dispute
