Punjab Assembly pays tribute to Sahibzadas’ sacrifice amidst naming controversy

The Punjab Assembly paid homage to the martyrdom of the four Sahibzadas — Baba Ajit Singh, Baba Jujhar Singh, Baba Zorawar Singh, and Baba Fateh Singh — today. The House also paid rich tributes to Mata Gujri, Baba Jivan Singh, Baba Sangat Singh, and Diwan Todar Mal.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said, “The sacrifice of the Sahibzadas holds a unique place in the history of humanity. Martyred at a very young age, their sacrifice inspires humanity to resist tyranny.”

Senior Congress MLA Rana Gurjit Singh expressed concerns about observing the day as Veer Bal Diwas, stating, “It is wrong to call them ‘Veer Bal’ when they were revered as ‘Babas’ in the Sikh community.”

Cabinet Minister Aman Arora questioned the origin of the term ‘Bal Diwas’, saying, “We need to know who christened Shaheedi Diwas as ‘Bal Diwas’.”

BJP working president Ashwani Sharma urged members to avoid politicising the tribute, saying, “Let’s not politicise the discussion on paying tributes to the Sahibzadas.
