Farmers staged a protest outside the District Administrative Complex (DAC) here on Wednesday saying the proposed Malwa canal would aggravate their problems, rather than solving them.
Malwa Canal Action Committee president Harinder Singh Thandewala said, “We lodged a symbolic protest against the state government. We fear that the polluted water from the Budha Nullah will be sent to our fields via the Harike barrage. There is hardly any need for this canal, as the Sirhind Feeder canal, which supplies water to this part of the state, has enough carrying capacity. Moreover, the new canal will worsen the problem of waterlogging in the area.”
Farmers claimed that no senior official came to receive a memorandum from them, and they were stopped at the entry of the District Administrative Complex
