Six months after the Vigilance Bureau arrested former Punjab cabinet minister and senior SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia, the Civil Lines police have arrested his supporter Davinder Singh Verka, allegedly for obstructing the vigilance team last year.
The arrest pertains to an incident that took place on June 25, when the Vigilance Bureau had taken Majithia into custody from his residence in Green Avenue, Amritsar, in a disproportionate assets case.
Davinder Singh Verka is accused of creating hurdles and disrupting the functioning of the Vigilance Bureau team from Mohali during the arrest operation. However, the police have so far refrained from making any official confirmation regarding the arrest.
It may be recalled that on June 25, the Vigilance Bureau arrested Bikram Singh Majithia from his Green Avenue residence. During the operation, a large number of Akali Dal supporters gathered at the spot and allegedly raised slogans, issued threats and attempted to block the police action. The situation forced the police to deploy barricades around the residence to control the crowd and ensure the safety of the officers involved in the operation.
The Civil Lines police had registered a case against Bikram Singh Majithia and over a dozen of his associates on charges related to obstruction of government officials in the discharge of their duties and creating law and order problems
