Family members of a farmer, who had died by suicide on Saturday night due to alleged harassment by tenants, refused to cremate the body and staged a protest outside the SSP office on Sunday evening.
The family placed the body outside the office and demanded justice.

The deceased has been identified as Gurjant Singh (38), a resident of Basti Pathana Wali in Ferozepur. He hung himself at a school building due to the alleged harassment by his tenants, who had not been paying rent for his shops for several months.

The police have registered an FIR against the accused, identified as Santokh, Tarsem Lal, Surinder Kapoor, Jinder, Ranjit, Deepak, Anokh Singh and one other person under Sections 306 of the IPC at Mamdot Police Station (FIR No. 66).
As per information, the deceased is survived by three daughters and a son.
DSP Rajbir Singh met the protesters and asked them to lift the dharna. However, the family members said that they would not do so till all accused are arrested.
Kulwant Singh, younger brother of the deceased, alleged that the police were protecting the accused.
The DSP said that the police have launched a manhunt and soon the accused would be nabbed. “The police have already registered an FIR in the case,” he said
