5 sons lost to ‘drugs’, Punjab woman demands job for grandson

Manjeet Kaur of Pandori Mohalla in Sultanpur Lodhi today bid a tearful adieu to her fifth son Sonu, who died due to “drug-linked complication” at a government hospital in Amritsar on Tuesday. Deaths of her five sons in the past eight years has left everyone shocked.

Wails rung out at the two-storey home of Manjeet, who performed the last rites of Sonu, at a brief distance from Ber Sahib Gurdwara and the Sultanpur Lodhi police station.

Manjeet, who lives with her husband, two daughter-in-laws and grandchildren, today again reiterated that all her sons died due to “chitta”.

A worker at the Ber Sahib Gurdwara in Sultanpur Lodhi for the past 10 years, Manjeet said, “Drugs have killed my five sons. All breadwinners of my family are gone now. Who will bring up these children? I urge the administration to give government job to our 22-year old grandson.”

“My eldest son Balwinder worked at a sweets shop for four years and two sons worked with nagar panchayat. All of them fell prey to drugs,” Manjeet said.

Lovejot Kaur, Sonu’s wife managed chores as she wept and held her 4-month old daughter Neerajdeep Kaur.

Sarabjit Kaur, Manjeet’s daughter-in-law, said, “My husband worked as a daily wager. He began consuming drugs and stopped giving money at home. He died four years after our wedding. We spent seven to eight lakhs on his treatment. All five brothers got hooked to drugs.” Lovejot said, “Men with covered faces come on motorcycles to sell drugs, which are are easily available at Lattianwal and Toti villages
