Gargaj slams govts over failure to curb sacrilege

Expressing serious concern over recurring incidents of sacrilege, Akal Takht acting Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj on Saturday said the successive governments had failed to curb such acts or ensure justice to the Sikh community.

He said repeated instances of sacrilege of the holy saroops of Guru Granth Sahib had been reported over the past several years, but effective action was missing. He alleged that in many cases the police declared the accused mentally unstable or released them after a short period, while the real perpetrators were never brought to book. “This approach not only denies justice to the Sikh community, but also fuels resentment and anguish,” he said. Referring to the ongoing struggle for a stringent law to prevent sacrilege, he appealed to the Sikh sangat and organisations to extend full support to the nagar kirtan being organised to press for strict legal provisions. He said the nagar kirtan would commence from Samana and conclude at the Golden Temple.

Reiterating that Sikhs revere Guru Granth Sahib as their living Guru, he said special laws were necessary to ensure exemplary punishment for those found guilty of sacrilege
