Not against Panthic unity: Akali Dal rebels

Senior leaders of breakaway Shiromani Akali Dal faction (Punar Surjit) on Tuesday said they were not against Panthic unity.

Parminder Singh Dhindsa, Gobind Singh Longowal, Gaganjit Singh Barnala and Babu Prakash Chand Garg said all party leaders were in favour of holding general elections of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which have not been held since 2011.

Dhindsa said they would hold talks with the Centre to conduct SGPC elections. If the Centre does not promise to hold elections soon, SAD (Punar Surjit) would launch an agitation, said Longowal. “Panthic unity can only take place under the guidance of Akal Takht,” said Dhindsa.

The roadmap for this struggle would be drafted under the leadership of party president Giani Harpreet Singh. They pointed out that the process of registering party was underway and it would be completed within two months.

Dhindsa said SAD (Punar Surjit) would soon present a detailed roadmap for the welfare of Punjabis
